Objectives:
To help develop and implement programs with children and young people where they can learn Scripture, understand Christ’s teachings, enjoy fellowship with each other, and be prepared for life with a Christian perspective
To help parents and families lead their children into Christian maturity through education, training, social activities, and other appropriate activities through which they will grow into an enduring and active faith in Jesus Christ.
To increase participation by children and young people in Sunday School and youth programs
Position Profile:
This is a part-time staff position that will require approximately twenty hours per week. There is some flexibility as to how those hours may be distributed. Reports to the Rector.
This staff member would work with both Sunday School and youth (Jr. and Sr. High) groups. It is expected that the work, at least initially, would require more activity on Sunday School programs than Jr. and Sr. High. This would shift over time as youth group programs and activities increase.
The annual Salary is $15,000 per year. Expenses (mileage and out-of pocket items) will be reimbursed according to diocesan policies.
Prior experience in working with children and young people (in church, or at school or camps) would be important.
This staff member would have a strong personal relationship with Jesus Christ, and be devoted to building up his Church. It will be important to be able to articulate the Bible’s witness and Christ’s love in ways that connect with children and young people. This person would lead worship with children and young people, and select appropriate Bible readings and music for youth programs.
Description of Duties:
1. Work with the volunteer Sunday School Coordinator during the 2007-08 school year
a. Ensure that for each Sunday there are sufficient teachers available, and be prepared to take a teaching assignment.
b. Make sure that curriculum and teaching materials are in place for each Sunday.
c. Coordinate other logistics and administrative details.
d. Help select curriculum for the 2008-09 school year.
e. Work with existing Sunday School activities, such as the Youth Bell Choir, and develop new activities.
2. Increase participation of St. Thomas youth in the church’s youth group (Jr/Sr. High).
3. Coordinate, and increase St. Thomas participation in, the Sunday evening youth group activities organized by the youth group coalition of St. Thomas, St. Peter’s by-the-Sea, Christ Church, and St. Patrick’s that currently meets at St. Thomas.
4. Work with church leadership in its efforts to reach out to the ever-increasing number of young families with children moving into Diamondhead.
5. Work with the Rector, Vestry, and parents to implement specific programs that would engage and be interesting to children and youth at times other than Sunday morning. This would include:
a. Help to identify and design the programs.
b. Systematically encourage parents and young people currently attending St. Thomas to participate in these activities.
c. Develop programs that will be attractive to young people in the community who currently do not attend St. Thomas or participate in church activities, and find ways to make the programs grow through new membership.
6. Increase participation in Diocesan youth programs, camps, and events.
7. Develop and maintain parent relationships.
a. Meet with parents as a group at least quarterly to help them be apprised of the Sunday School and youth activities calendar, to set forth needs for volunteers among the parents, and to hear parental advice and suggestions.
b. Work with parents individually as needed to further the objectives of the program.
8. Assist with ongoing St. Thomas activities such as Youth Sunday, Popcorn Theology (movie followed by discussion), VBS, Christmas and Easter plays and pageants.
9. Publicize Sunday School and youth programs.
a. Prepare articles and photographs for publication in The St. Thomas Times and Tidings, the Diamondhead News, the website, and other possible media outlets.
b. Help prepare hard copy brochures for distribution in the church, to visitors, etc.
10. Other activities of expressing God’s love.
a. Pray for the children and young people.
b. Send birthday greetings, and recognition of other special accomplishments and special occasions in the youths' life.
11. Assist the rector with other related Sunday School and youth matters as appropriate.
